Top 10 running tracks 2023

Here are my top running tracks of 2023 in no particular order. Click on the link to hear in YouTube.

10 - Rinse and repeat by Riton Kahlo

Time to make the club go up
Time to shut the club down
This is not how I woke up
But it's how I look now
If you leave with me
We'll be on till morn
Then we rinse and repeat
And it just goes on

And it does just go on. The bass, the beat. Relentless, hypnotic. Perfect for that Sunday long run. Trance inducing - in a good way.

9 - Long live the strange by Gaz Coombes

Ex Supergrass front man Coombes brings us a catchy and heartfelt ballad with a churning sound and his exceptional and unique voice.

If you like this you may also like: Caught by the fuzz by Supergrass, Celebrate by Grovesider

8 - Echo Party by Sylvan Esso

Quirky and snappy tune with rolling bass, synths and samples galore.

7 - Silent running by Gorillaz (feat. Adeleye Omotayo)

Consistently good. Most years one of their tracks makes it onto my top 10. This one is a slower love song with the perfect chorus for a meditative run through the landscape.

Silent running back to you. Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run....

If you like this you may also like: Be on your way by Daughter, Gold by Sigur Ros.

6 - Hi Ren by Ren

This one is all about the lyrics and the word play, oh and the guitar, the plucking guitar! If you don't click on any of the other links on this page, click on this one and be blown away.

The song takes the form of a conversation between the two sides of his personality. It is a study of his mental health struggles and experience of medical system. Brutal. A revelation. Powerful. Moving.

If you like this you may also like: Money game by Ren, Define my name by Nas and DJ Premier

5 - Finifugal by Aeseaes

Probably the most vulnerable and romantic song of the past few years. I lost count of how many times I cried while running through the streets listening to this. Beautiful and pure. Haunting harmonies, gentle strings. Close to perfect.

stay
and i will
hold you close
and i will
and i
and i will
hear you

4 - I want you by Elvis Costello

The story of an obsessive romance. This was on Costello's 1986 album Blood & Chocolate. I can't remember how I came across it. So thankful I did however. Elvis describes it as sounding like the aural equivalent of a blurry polaroid. When his voice breaks....

Many Londoners have been surprised by the runner coming past yelling 'I want you!'

If you like this you may also like: I inside the old I dying by PJ Harvey, Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac

3 - All being fine by King Hannah

Moody, sultry, sexy, gritty but concerned with wetting the bed. Confused. Take a listen.

If you like this you may also like: Like a prayer by King Hannah (Madonna cover).

2 - Big Eye by Christine and the queens

If you want atmosphere then this has it in bucket loads. Sweeping vocals, relentless drums, echoes. It makes you feel 100 feet tall. Put this on and the world is yours. Dive into the big eye!

If you like this you may also like: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space by Spiritualized, Gabriel by Lamb

1 - I want to be your only pet by Bombay Cycle Club

A fast moving churner. For a while I was singing 'I want to be your rolling pin' before I saw what the song was called. Try not to hear it. It feels like it will never end and you won't want it to. Looping, hypnotizing and just lovely.

If you like this you may also like: Kid Caffeine by Red Axes, Real Life by Lanterns on the lake

And a special mention to Marta and Tricky for their exceptional Today which just missed out on a top 10 spot.
