Run The Date - Day 3

Date: Tuesday 3rd September

Distance: 3 miles

Motivational quote: "Running is a gift."

Sponsor: Sharon Moore

Song: This is the one by The Stone Roses

Running partner: MAF C25K group - Helen, Juliette and Martin

Weather: Warm and sunny. Breezy.

Fuel: Cold pasta and pesto

Route: Along the Leas

Comments: I was joined today by some of the Couch 2 5K group I led earlier this year. Martin, Helen and Juliette accompanied me through the 3 miles on our lunch break.

We began at the office and after 200 yards were on The Leas overlooking the sea. It was a beautiful sight with calm seas and a clear view across to Dungeness in the west and France in the east. We ran to the top of the hill past the Grand and Metropole hotels before taking the lower path in the opposite direction until we reached the Step Short Memorial Arch.

This beautiful metallic structure was erected in 2008 and stands at the top of Remembrance Road which leads down to the harbour. During WW1 this was a major point of embarkation for France. The road is a 20% gradient and to descend soldiers were ordered to “Step short!” hence the name of the arch.

Rather than repeat our C25K course by returning the way we had come we turned into town and dodged the pedestrians, cars and phone zombies. A loop around past Kingsnorth Gardens brought us back to the office and eventually the car park. We were 0.1 miles short and so the four of us did the ‘serious’ runners trick of running up and down the road to complete our full mileage.

I mentioned to Martin that I had now completed 6 miles and just had 429 to go. He thankfully gave me a more positive way to think about it. I had already completed 1/10th of the challenge. Thanks Martin.

A big thank you to those who have sponsored me in the last few days as the challenge has begun. I am very close now to hitting the £1000 mark for Folkestone Rainbow Centre.
