Friday 13th. What could go wrong?

Today I went out with my friend and colleague Martin Salmon for a lunchtime half marathon (well just 0.1 miles short). We have run together before and I find him good company. He is also an inspiration to me having run over 100 marathons.

We set out towards Hythe and ran along the seafront until we reached Seabrook and the start of the Royal Military Canal. Here we joined the grass verge along the bank between the golf course and the water. The sun came out and it started to get very warm.

A mile or so later we reached Hythe which is split in half by the canal, north from south. Once through the busy streets we arrived at the miniature railway station (A miniature train runs from Hythe to Dymchurch – the station is full size!)

From here we followed the train line but were immediately plunged into the beauty of the countryside. Overhanging trees, still waters, a pair of swans with their three cygnets, quiet. After 1.5 miles we had reached halfway and turned back the way we came.

We crossed a bridge to come back on the other side of the canal and stopped to look at a small sound mirror that remains from the war. It was used to listen for incoming enemy planes.

Retracing our steps, we began to tire as the wind was in our faces and quite strong albeit cooling.

Once back we climbed the zig zag path and then had to run another mile as I had forgotten to restart my watch after a drinks break and missed almost a mile of the run. Note to self: check and double check your watch is running.

During the run we had seen an old red London bus with the number 13 on the front. It had driven past and we were desperate to find it and have our photo taken on board to commemorate this run, but sadly it wasn’t to be.
