Hercules and the living dead - parkrun 183

This week's parkrun coincided with Halloween and there were a number of the 342 runners who got into the spirit of the occasion as you can see above. There were also some scarily fast times at the front of the field and a frighteningly good 54 personal bests.

Gabby was our Run Director and she was supported by a great group of willing volunteers who offered support and encouragement on a chilly morning.

First place in both female and male categories were visitors from Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club. Eileen Bradley finished in 22:24 and Ben Toomer managed to break 16 minutes which resulted in the marshals having their own mini race to get in place before he crossed the line! A special mention too for David Green who, fresh from a 6th place finish at the Snowdon Marathon last weekend, still managed a strong 4th place.

In the women's race Julie Evans managed to sustain her slender lead at the top of the annual points competition while Norbert Mihalik retains top spot in the men's table.

We had two landmark runs this week. Congratulations to Luke Tombs who ran his 50th parkrun. Meanwhile visitor Charles Green chose Northampton to complete his 250th parkrun. We are his 166th different event. Well done Charles!

I was on token support this week and as always it was inspiring to see the effort that is put in throughout the field. No matter what time people crossed the line they were obviously giving everything. Young and old, experienced and newbie, human and canine...

Although we always mention the fastest finishers parkrun isn't a race. Everyone is a winner for getting out of bed before 9am on a cold Saturday morning whether they are running or marshalling.

For all those who don't get a mention you are what makes parkrun the great event it is week in, week out. If you have a story you would like to share with others of how running has helped you come and chat to me before or after the run.

Sweatshop joined us in the morning and handed out vouchers for a 20% discount on their purchases. Sweatshop have been a big supporter of parkrun along with Tribesports and Fitbit.

Parkrun in turn has been supporting good causes. In October we were all encouraged to donate our time. This was an innovative campaign which involved people giving a financial donation equivalent to their finishing time.

The campaign was a great success raising £101,273 for Alzheimer's Research UK. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously.
